Like I really don’t have the words to say how much I enjoyed this book. If you’re looking for a book that contains dark academia, witches, demons, vampires, forbidden love, betrayal and so many twists and turns that you’ll never guess what’s about to happen next, then Coven is the book for you! Now I’m gonna do my best to describe this book to you while I wallow in an emotional puddle! The plot was amazing!! We literally start off with a bang, that reels you right in and I swear doesn’t let you go! We start off with a select population of witches being summoned to the academy for witches. An academy that is finally reopened after being shut down for 50 years due to a horrendous tragedy! While it would seem most of the witches are excited to be going back, in order to properly learn how to use their magic, some, mostly our FMC Willow, are resistant to returning to a place with age old tragedies, and rules and regulations placed on them that haven’t moved out of the stone era. Don’t let this hinder you though because when I tell you I was flipping pages late into the night just to see what happened next without a care for the fact that I had to get up early for work the next day, I am not lying to you! I mean once we really enter the academy things really begin to kick off! I mean of course you have your usual academy drama that you would expect from a group of witches aged somewhere between sixteen and their early twenties, but on the flip side there are also about 100 other plot twists that you would never expect in your typical run of the mill dark academia book. If that’s not enough to sell you though, let me tell you about the character because they really are to good to be true!
Brief Summary of The Coven
The characters are honestly what made this book a five star read for me! Honestly Woods just has a way of writing characters that makes them so memorable and enjoyable that they stick with you long after the words The End. First off we had our FMC Willow!! I absolutely adored her, she may in fact be my favorite of Woods FMCS that I’ve read so far. I loved that she was protective of the people she cared about, to the point she was willing to risk herself to make sure that they were safe to make hard decisions that may stain her soul and soil her hands if it meant that they were safe at the end of the day. I also enjoyed that while she grew up with a more difficult and very different home life than most of the Coven witches summoned she didn’t allow that to make her cruel or closed off. She was still very nonjudgmental and compassionate. This didn’t make her weak though, she wasn’t about to take anyone’s flack. She had no problem putting people in their place and doing it with a smile on her face! Of course we can’t forget about our morally grey love interest though, Grey, and when I say morally grey I really mean dabbling in shades of pitch black. But hey who says the villain shouldn’t get the girl? I for one am always here for a villain gets the girl story. I loved that Grey was willing to go toe to toe with Willow from the beginning. He made the mistake of underestimating her once and when she put him in his place, rather than take it as a blow to the ego he chose to figure out how to push all of Willows buttons as well as making sure not to underestimate her, while letting those around her know they shouldn’t underestimate her either.
