Brief Summary of How to Choose the Most Eligible Bachelor

Sally Forbes has written a clean regency romance with a twisted tale of desperate finances, arranged marriage, Pleasing parents, And discovering true love. It was diverting, but I found the story a little long on introspection , and too light on the mystery and intrigue which would have put it over the top. Next time, perhaps she can focus on building more intrigue into a novel. As a picky reader, I already know that true love will win. What makes a story unforgettable is the journey to achieving it. I don’t need an epilogue at the end of a story to tell me the good stuff has happened IE meaning marriage, and a baby on the way. That is a given in romance stories. I feel like Forbes should have concentrated on solving the mystery of what happened to the missing textiles. Or developed Rupert’s nefarious ambitions earlier in the story. Solving the financial dilemmas and adding intrigue and/ or crime would have given the story maturity and believability . Forbes is a good story teller. As she grows as a writer I think more complicated plots will improve her work. Also she needs to allow her hero and heroines to grow up. Owen would have been a better character if he had matured enough to confront his father. Jane would have stepped into her womanhood if she had been matured into facing her father and discussing finances. Forbes had too many irons in the fire. All could have been explored with more depth and less adolescent anxiety. Story is set in regency period but does not exact period mores and does not reflect adequate peerage protocol. A light read.
