The tension is excellent in this book. Slow burn is one of my favorite tropes, and this book delivered it. I enjoyed our male main character Darrien Cassel in this book. He was a fun character to follow. I am excited to learn more about him! Loren Calla, our main female character, I did not find to be as charming as our main male character. She was irritating often, and sometimes I had difficulty caring about what she had to say. I didn’t like the trope of “I’m not good enough,” but it wasn’t a make or break it for me.
Brief Summary of City of Gods and Monsters
At the beginning of this book it is made super clear that it is modern day fantasy. I, personally, felt like it had more of a gangster/mafia vibe at the very beginning of the book without the fantasy. Then Edwards gets into this phenomenal world building that completely captures you. Around 200 pages I was completely captivated by the characters, the world, and the dynamic each character has. Loren is the sweet, good girl that never gets into anything but wants to prove herself to be more. Darian is THE devil that had been bad for a majority of his life. When he sets out on his bounty for Loren he learns that she is human and wants to help her. We are then introduced the rest of the Devils and another large assortment of witches, vampires, werewolves and warlocks. The way that all of these characters interact through the world and with each other, it is very clear that Edwards has taken her time and thoroughly thought out each character. The banter is fantastic, the character development is amazing. In a world of devils there has to be an angel. There are some slower parts that are crucial to the main story, but other than those few parts Darian and Loren are together for the rest of the book and I personally loved that. Being able to see their growth step by step was a big thing for me. So much happens in this book and I loved that we were able to see how it effected both Loren and Darien.
