A girl who was raised a man and a man who was lost in the wilderness. It was a very unique experience in a book. Mrs. Reid knows how to keep a reader hooked. It was a sweet and lovely book with a different view on how woman supposed to be in that time period and how men were expected to act also. I love this book and I can’t wait until the next book.
Brief Summary of The Wolf and the Wildflower
Everything about this plot was a fresh twist on two familiar tropes; a woman masquerading as a man and a long lost peer. The fact that so much of it was implausible was easy to overlook because it was so darn interesting. What really kept this from five stars were all the shallow secondary characters. The two mothers are ridiculously selfish. I’ve certainly encountered more evil mothers in HR, but these two were masquerading as loving parents, and the reality couldn’t be further from love. The hero’s mother, after reuniting with her son who was lost in the wilderness for ten years, only cares that he holds his pinky out when taking tea and learns to dance the waltz so he can marry a woman of her choosing. The heroine’s mother forced her daughter to live as a male for 23 years and makes her feel guilty for wanting to tell her father. The heroine’s father was even worse. He supposedly loved his wife, but if she hadn’t mislead him, she likely would have died in childbirth trying to deliver the son he obsessed over. And not for nothing, but he would have been the last psychologist I’d want to see if I needed help. The hero’s extended family were also unlikable. So, it is the hero and heroine against the world and their own demons. And that makes this story work.
