The Scepter was absolutely incredible and is easily a 5 star read for me. In 83 pages, J. Bree absolutely captivated me and made me want, actually NEED, the next book in the series. That is ART. That is SKILL. This is the first novella in her new The Mortal Fates series and to say that this world she has created is one I’m so happy to fall into is an understatement. The Scepter follows Rooke and Pemba, witches of the Ravenwyrd coven, on their journey to learn of Rooke’s fate from a Seer after all seems lost when they discovered their home and their coven burned to ash. The writing had me hanging on to every single word. There was so much meaning to everything, at one point it was said how the trees spoke to one another to prep for an oncoming downpour of rain, just to give you a taste of the imagery conveyed in this book
