Some cultures believe fifteen years old was a milestone, sixteen was a rite of passage, eighteen was when you became a legal adult, but twenty was a death sentence. At least in my case. I lay in my bed, staring at the ceiling. There were many times I had wished for this day, but then there were times I wished for it not to come. A female in my situation had no choice, no other options. Doomed at twenty years old, no less. I could hear people moving around the house, getting ready for the dinner party. One would think the President, the Queen of England, and the Dalai Lama were about to walk in. In truth, the people who would be in the house tonight were the ones who actually ran the world. When the knock came, I already knew who stood on the other side. “Come in,” I said. The door flew open as my two sisters ran in and jumped onto the bed with me. “Okay, we left you alone for an entire hour,” Gemma said. “It was torture,” Christabel added, curling into my side.

Growing up in this world, I knew almost everyone who would be in attendance tonight. With Papa, he had taken me to a lot of meetings, knowing I had to be prepped to take over. Sure, many would make fun of him for it, but he ignored it and continued to conduct business. Gliding down the stairs, I saw more guests had arrived. I smiled, a perfect smile, and shook hands with many of the gentlemen, hugged some of the females, and held myself high. All eyes were on me and even though my nerves were on edge, this night was about my entire family. Whatever happened here tonight, set the path for Gemma and Christabel, even my parents. We all knew it. After an hour of mingling, it was announced dinner was ready. Everyone began to make their way outside. Gemma looped her arm with mine, leaning close to my ear. “I swear it’s like we’re at a meat market and you’re the prized pork butt.” I giggled. “I doubt it. No one has really said anything to me. I figured I would have had at least one prospect.” I didn’t need to hide my disappointment from Gemma. “Trust me, you have them. Men have been circled around Mom and Papa all night. You probably have twenty, but you know the rules.” Gemma rolled her eyes. Of course, I knew the rules. When a daughter of the Family turned twenty, her family hosted a party to show her off. It is then the eligible males approach the parents—typically the father—and ask for the girl’s hand. Sounds simple, right? It wasn’t because the girl was nothing but a pawn in the world of the American Mob. Whoever she married was for strategic purposes only. She was used to strengthen her family ties with another. I hated that particular part of it because I would never marry for love. I would marry for contracts, deals, and, in the long run, money.
